Hi again Lorraine, You have hit on my biggest complaint, people in general have absolutley no ********** idea how hard and painful arthritis can be. My family and friends are only just begining to understand through me. Even though we all know you should not have to apologise for having this dreadful disease people of all ages are unsympathetic. Next time at tesco tell them you require assistance to pack, or do as I try to do now, shop on-line. Stick with it, you do have people on here that understand and will help if they can.
One wound up, John.

I hate shopping just lately. My wrists have taken to chucking my money all over the floor when I open my purse in nearly every shop I go in. I then struggle to pick it up and am sure people think I'm either drunk or a bit mad when I say "oops my wrists aren't working today".

this is one of my biggest struggles i struggled with for years, those little 5 pences are the worst plus awful especially on a bad day to feel no one really understood and wondering if people were thinking i was just a bit strange at the supermarket queue.....
Im really sorry to hear others have problems too but feeling a strong solidarity knowing we're all in this together xx
These are my coping mechanisms-
Take shopping buddies with me
Stick to the assistants who are more understanding
i reported an assistant once who took upon herself to moan about her previous customer (a sweet elderly lady who was a little bit slow with her money) When she'd had the nerve to moan to me I said "sorry love but you've got another one here" and informed her I had rheumatoid arthritis - her unsympathetic mood didnt improve and i reported her to the manager as i went out the door, funnily enough didnt see her again.... Take my own bags or ALWAYS ask for bags to be opened if i use plastic ones
Find out when the quieter times are and go then
Dont care what people think
and laugh at / with or to myself sometimes
and finally there's always home delivery.... xxxxx

I had a horrific experience in Lidl - their layout is not condusive to people with disabilities. they have a shelf of about 2 foot square by the till. then the packing shelf was over 6 foot away from the till. I did ask the assistant to slow down but she didnt and my purchases ended up spilling on to the floor. She said that she has to be quick. I spoke to the manager and he says I should ask her to slow down. I dont think I should ask to slow down I think the assistant should only go as fast as the person can pack. Common sense.
Anyway apparently shopping online is an option, its good for the planet too (gosh I am such an earth mother) as less carbon footprint in warehouse compared to shop. Anway I think I am going to give it a go to at least get my non pershible stuff delivered, so I just need to milk bread etc. Speaking of milk i saw a milk float during the snows delivering next door at 6am - so might consider that.
Meanwhile I now spend my money in shops that are more accommodating .....

We still get our milk delivered by the milkman! I do an on-line shop once a month for all the non-perishable foods so just have to shop for fresh food each week, it's made it so much easier. As for the small change, our change jar where all the copper coins go has now progressed to holding all the 5p and 20p coins that I can't cope with when shopping!

I do the same as you Dorat regarding the shopping on line once a month. It is so.... much easier than struggling to the supermarket for a full shop each week.
I also shop for clothing etc on line. It's nice to have a look around ocassionally and i find it less stressful if i know i'm only looking and that i don't have to buy. I can only shop for a very short time as i find my mobility is really bad now.
Thank goodness for the internet!!

Yes shopping on line is the best! LOL
I took Patrick with me today (for moral support!LOL) and all was fine but that was only for a few things - I always use our own bags too and get the childrne to bring it in from the car............
Still had the problem with my card, I am considering changing purses so the card it more easily accessible!
Love,
Amanda

Agree with everyone about shopping, small change, cards bags checkouts!!!!! etc etc. It drives me mad, i feel really panicky now at checkouts, (roll on the counselling!) and i don't buy much in the shops, i get alot online. How i have not started crying at a checkout i don't know. My sister, who can be awkward says she would go slower on purpose if it was her but she doesn't have to live with this.
Chin up everyone.

Hooray for the internet! The part I like is waiting for the goods to be delivered, it's like Christmas or birthday. When we had the snow I ordered 5 items online, each from different suppliers. I know I had to pay for postage, but it was worth it.

Hi everyone, Im also an Internet shopper, it can be as much fun, but shouldn't let those narrow minded people out there stop us from having the shopping experience that everyone else has... thats just my rant as I do lack in self confidence due to R.A but when I feel strong I can laugh at stupid shop assistance, or say its my weak wrist, hands etc.. Iv watched my mum struggle at the shops all my life and it's heart breaking seeing her trying to hurry but getting stressed cos her hands are so deformed cos of R.A, now its my turn and realise her frustration, why can't there be a little paitence corinne xx
